PROVO, Utah — In a move that could significantly strengthen BYU’s defensive front, former Oklahoma State defensive tackle Joustin Kirkland announced Thursday night that he will be transferring to BYU. The addition comes as the Cougars continue to reshape their roster with experienced talent to compete in the highly competitive Big 12 Conference.
Kirkland, a 6-foot-4, 340-pound interior lineman, brings size, strength, and Power Five experience to the Cougars’ defense. He spent the 2023 season with the Oklahoma State Cowboys, appearing in multiple games and contributing to a unit that helped lead the team to a successful campaign and a bowl game appearance. Though his individual stats were modest, his presence in the trenches was notable, often occupying double teams and freeing up opportunities for linebackers and edge rushers.
Originally from Utah, Kirkland played high school football at Juan Diego Catholic High School in Draper, where he was a standout on the defensive line. His return to his home state to suit up for BYU marks a homecoming of sorts and is likely influenced by both proximity to family and the chance to play a more prominent role on the field.
For BYU, the move is a timely one. The Cougars have faced challenges on the defensive line in recent seasons, particularly with depth and size in the middle. Injuries and inconsistency have plagued the unit, and coaches have made it clear that rebuilding the defensive front is a priority heading into the 2025 season. Kirkland is expected to compete immediately for significant playing time and could emerge as a starter depending on how quickly he adapts to BYU’s defensive scheme.
Head coach Kalani Sitake and defensive coordinator Jay Hill have emphasized the importance of physicality and gap control in their defensive philosophy. Adding a player like Kirkland, who has experience going up against some of the best offensive lines in the country, fits well within that vision.
“This is a big get for us,” said one source close to the program. “Justin is a guy who can clog up the middle and anchor the line. He’s got the experience and the body type we’ve been looking for. Plus, he knows what it takes to compete at the highest level.”
Kirkland’s commitment also speaks to BYU’s growing presence in the transfer portal, where the program has been increasingly active in finding experienced players to complement its developing young core. As the Cougars continue to adjust to life in the Big 12, the ability to bring in talent like Kirkland could be a difference-maker in turning around their defensive performance.
Kirkland took to social media Thursday night to make the announcement official, expressing excitement about joining BYU and gratitude for his time at Oklahoma State. “Excited for what’s next. Ready to get to work in Provo,” he wrote.
As fall camp approaches, all eyes will be on how quickly Kirkland can integrate into the system and what kind of impact he can have on a BYU defense looking to take a major step forward.
