Trenton Bourguet Transitions from Quarterback to Coach: Will Remain at Arizona State as Assistant Running Backs Coach Under Kenny Dillingham After Stepping Away from Playing Career

Tempe, Ariz. — May 20, 2025

In a surprising but heartfelt move, former Arizona State quarterback Trenton Bourguet has officially stepped away from his playing career and embraced a new path in football. Bourguet will remain in Tempe, transitioning into a coaching role as the Sun Devils’ new assistant running backs coach under head coach Kenny Dillingham. The decision marks the beginning of a new chapter for a player who has become a beloved figure in the program for his leadership, perseverance, and commitment both on and off the field.

Bourguet, who spent five seasons with Arizona State and emerged as a key figure during a turbulent era for the program, made the announcement early this week in a statement shared through the university’s athletics department. Though the news closes the book on his collegiate playing days, it signals a new beginning in coaching — a profession Bourguet has long expressed interest in pursuing.

“I’ve given everything I have to this game as a player, and while it’s hard to step away, I know this is the right time,” Bourguet said. “Football has given me so much, and now I get to give back in a new way. I’m honored to stay at Arizona State and be part of this staff under Coach Dillingham. I can’t wait to help mentor the next generation of Sun Devils.”

Bourguet’s move into coaching doesn’t come as a complete surprise to those who’ve followed his career. Known for his football IQ, leadership qualities, and attention to detail, he often served as an on-field extension of the coaching staff. Despite facing stiff competition for the starting quarterback job throughout his time in Tempe, Bourguet was consistently praised for his maturity, resilience, and ability to rally teammates.

After walking on at Arizona State in 2019, the Tucson native gradually earned respect in the locker room. His breakout moment came in 2022, when he stepped in as a backup and led the Sun Devils to an upset win over then-No. 21 Washington, throwing for 182 yards and three touchdowns. That performance helped solidify his place as a trusted presence in the quarterback room and began to define his role as a leader for the program.

Bourguet started several games over the next two seasons, including in 2023 under new head coach Kenny Dillingham. Injuries and competition for the quarterback job limited his overall playing time, but his presence remained invaluable. He frequently helped guide younger quarterbacks through the playbook, acted as a liaison between players and coaches, and was often seen offering input on the sidelines during games.

“Trenton is everything you want in a football player, and even more in a coach,” Dillingham said. “He sees the game with a coach’s eye, and he’s been preparing for this transition even before he knew it. I’m thrilled he’s staying on staff. He brings a unique perspective and will be a huge asset to our players, especially in the running backs room.”

While the assistant running backs coach role may seem unconventional for a former quarterback, Dillingham and the staff emphasized Bourguet’s versatility and understanding of offensive schemes. His experience reading defenses, understanding protections, and working within multiple offensive systems gives him a valuable edge in helping develop running backs who are not only physically talented but also mentally sharp.

Bourguet’s coaching responsibilities will include assisting with player development, film breakdowns, game preparation, and sideline communication during games. It’s a role that will allow him to learn the ropes while continuing to build on his deep understanding of the game.

“I’m excited to learn,” Bourguet said. “This is just the beginning for me. I’ve had great mentors, and I want to be that for others. Being around this program, being around the guys — that’s what I love most. I may not be playing anymore, but I’m still all-in.”

For Arizona State, Bourguet’s decision reflects a broader culture shift under Dillingham, who has emphasized player development, continuity, and creating a “homegrown” coaching tree. Keeping a respected locker room figure like Bourguet involved with the team adds to that foundation.

As the Sun Devils continue to build for the future in the ever-changing landscape of college football, having a familiar, trusted face like Trenton Bourguet on the sideline may be just the kind of stability the program needs.
