ATHENS, GEORGIA (May 7, 2025) – In a truly remarkable and unprecedented achievement, the Oklahoma Sooners softball team has etched its name in the history books, clinching the Southeastern Conference (SEC) regular-season title in their very first year of competition in the league. This monumental feat was officially secured on Friday, May 2nd, and was further solidified with the announcement that the Sooners have earned the coveted No. 1 seed in the upcoming SEC Tournament.

The Oklahoma Sooners, a program synonymous with national dominance in collegiate softball having won the last four consecutive NCAA Women’s College World Series championships and boasting eight national titles in total, made the highly anticipated move to the SEC at the beginning of the 2025 season. While expectations were high for Patty Gasso’s juggernaut program, few could have predicted such immediate and emphatic success in what is widely considered the most competitive conference in Division I softball.

The Sooners’ journey through their inaugural SEC schedule was nothing short of spectacular. Displaying the same blend of dominant pitching, explosive offense, and unwavering defense that has defined their dynasty, Oklahoma navigated a gauntlet of formidable SEC opponents. Their resilience was particularly evident in several hard-fought series victories, showcasing their ability to win close games and overcome adversity against top-tier competition.

The clinching of the regular-season title came even before the Sooners took the field for their Friday matchup against the Florida Gators. With the No. 2 seed Texas A&M Aggies falling to the Tennessee Volunteers in Knoxville, the Sooners were mathematically guaranteed the top spot in the conference standings. This unexpected development allowed the team to celebrate their historic achievement even before their weekend series in Gainesville concluded.

Finishing the regular season with an impressive 17-7 record in SEC play and a stellar overall record of 43-7, the Sooners have not only captured the regular-season crown but have also earned the No. 1 seed in the SEC Tournament, which is set to begin this week in Athens, Georgia. This top seeding grants the Sooners a crucial double-bye, allowing them to bypass the initial rounds of the tournament and enter directly into the quarterfinals on Thursday.

“This is a truly special accomplishment for our program,” said Head Coach Patty Gasso in a statement released after the title was secured. “To come into the SEC for the first time and achieve the regular-season championship is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and unwavering belief of our players and coaching staff. I am incredibly proud of this team and their commitment to excellence.”

The Sooners’ offense has been characteristically potent, leading the SEC in on-base percentage (.451) and slugging percentage (.627), while also being tied for the conference lead in home runs with 95. Their pitching staff has also been dominant, consistently shutting down opposing offenses and providing a formidable presence in the circle.

With the No. 1 seed in the SEC Tournament, the Sooners will await the winner of the second-round matchup between the No. 8 seed Mississippi State Bulldogs and the No. 9 seed Louisiana State Tigers. Oklahoma swept Mississippi State during the regular season but did not face LSU, setting up a potentially intriguing first tournament game.

Beyond the SEC Tournament title, the Sooners are also vying for a top-eight national seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament. Securing a top-eight seed would guarantee that Oklahoma hosts both the Regional and Super Regional rounds in Norman, providing a significant home-field advantage as they pursue their fifth consecutive national championship.

The historic achievement of the Oklahoma Sooners in their debut SEC season has sent a clear message to the rest of the college softball world: their dominance is not confined to any single conference. As they embark on the SEC Tournament as the top seed, the Sooners are poised to continue their remarkable journey and further solidify their legacy as one of the greatest programs in the history of the sport. The softball world will be watching with anticipation as they aim to add an SEC Tournament title to their already historic debut season in the conference.
