In a move that blends history, experience, and a fresh vision for the future, the University of Tennessee has officially appointed former professional football legend Willie Gault as the new Assistant General Manager of the Tennessee Volunteers football program. The announcement, made Friday morning, has generated excitement across the Volunteer fanbase and college football community alike.

Willie Gault, a standout wide receiver for the Volunteers from 1979 to 1982, brings with him a legacy of excellence both on and off the field. He went on to enjoy a successful NFL career, most notably with the Chicago Bears, where he played a key role in their legendary 1985 Super Bowl-winning team. Known for his blazing speed and world-class athleticism—he was also an Olympic-caliber track star—Gault returns to Rocky Top with the goal of helping steer the program toward national prominence.

“I’m honored to be back at the University of Tennessee in this capacity,” Gault said during his introductory press conference. “Tennessee has always been home to me. This program gave me everything, and now it’s my turn to give back. I’m excited to work with the staff, our athletes, and everyone who loves this great universit

y.”

Gault’s appointment is part of a broader effort by Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel and Athletic Director Danny White to modernize the football program’s operations, especially in areas like player development, NIL strategy, alumni relations, and recruitment. As Assistant General Manager, Gault will be tasked with supporting the football operations department, guiding current student-athletes, and leveraging his deep NFL network and experience to open doors for Tennessee players.

“Willie Gault is a Volunteer legend whose football résumé speaks for itself,” said AD Danny White. “He brings a unique perspective from both college and professional football that will greatly benefit our athletes and our program. We’re thrilled to welcome him home.”

Gault’s career at Tennessee was defined by his explosiveness and versatility. He still holds multiple school records for all-purpose yards and return touchdowns. Beyond his on-field achievements, Gault was a team leader and a dedicated student-athlete—a combination the university hopes he can help instill in the next generation of Vols.

Fans and former teammates alike have celebrated the news. Many see Gault’s return as not only symbolic but strategic, bridging the past and future of Tennessee football. His presence is also expected to bolster recruiting, as prospects and their families will be drawn to the opportunity to learn from someone who has reached the pinnacle of the sport.

As college football continues to evolve with the growing influence of NIL, the transfer portal, and changing athlete expectations, programs are looking for forward-thinking leaders with strong connections and credibility. Willie Gault embodies all of those qualities.

With Gault now part of the leadership team, Tennessee Vols football has added a powerful new voice—one that knows what it takes to win, and who has never forgotten what it means to wear the orange and white.
